CAPTION: Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel can run for Chicago mayor although he spent much of the last two years living in Washington while working for President Barack Obama, the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners ruled Thursday. (Dec. 23)
Rahm Emanuel has been cleared to run for mayor of Chicago.
The city's election board ruled Thursday that the former White House chief of staff couldn't be excluded from the February race based on residency rules.
Emanuel had been living in Washington since President Barack Obama was sworn in back in January of last year.
He moved back in October and immediately began running for mayor.
However his time in D-C raised questions about whether he was even eligible to run for the office.
Earlier this month, an election board hearing officer presided over days of testimony concerning that very matter.
And on Thursday it decided to let him on the ballot because it was clear to the board that Emanuel had no intention of terminating his Chicago residency.
This decision though may not be final as it's almost certain to be challenged in court.
