What did other Human Species look like?
Homo Floresiensis lived about 50,000 years ago in Indonesia and were estimated to be only one meter tall when fully grown. Unfortunately, these hobbit like cousins of ours went extinct when Homo Sapiens arrived in the area.
Homo Erectus were said to have evolved around 2 million years ago and were said to be about the same size as modern humans. Although there arent that many fossils, it seems as though there was little difference in size between men and women of this species. The last known homo erectus lived just over 100,000 years ago and is thought to have died out due to climate change.
Neanderthals are the most famous human sub-group and were shorter than homo-sapiens. However, they were much stockier and would be classed as overweight using a modern BMI measurement. Neandathals died out just under 30,000 years ago after being outcompeted and killed by modern humans. Interesting new research suggests that they actually bred with homo sapiens and it is estimated that non-sub-saharan populations contain between 1-7% Neanderthal DNA.
