One of the best experiences Utica ABSN students gain during their 16 months in the accelerated nursing program is in clinical rotations. Clinical experience in nursing school provides students to practice what they learn in online coursework and labs and apply it to actual patients. And at Utica ABSN, students experience this at Memorial Healthcare Systems, and it all begins during the first semester.
“My favorite part of the ABSN program has been the clinical experience,” says Catalina, Class of 2019. “We have partnered with Memorial Healthcare System and they are a great hospital to be practicing at because they are one of the best hospitals in south Florida. The experience have been amazing.”
Catalina feels that the opportunity for ABSN students to practice at Memorial makes a huge difference and is the most valuable part of the program. “Memorial is focused on patient care and patient satisfaction,” she says.
Sandra, Class of 2019, agrees with Catalina saying the healthcare system serves as such a great teaching ground for ABSN students.
“Memorial staff has been excellent,” says Sandra. “I feel like they‘re a great teaching hospital. I’ve seen and I’ve shadowed at hospitals that SAY that they’re teaching, but there’s no connection there. You can tell people just don’t want to waste the time in teaching students. So I love that they’ve always welcomed us to the floors.”
Clinical experience in nursing school provides such a great insight into what your career will actually look like as a nurse, and at Utica ABSN students feel it is great to be working with a partner that has a mission in line with their goals - connecting with patients in need.
“I think that building the connection and feeling like you’re making a change in somebody’s life is what it is all about,” says Sandra. “Being able to see a smile, or seeing a sign of relief and knowing your patient knows someone cares and someone is listening, I think that is the greatest satisfaction of nursing in general.”
