A decimal is a number with one or more digits to the right of the decimal point. The decimal point is to the right of the Ones place value. These place values represent amounts less than 1 whole, that start at tenths. As we move towards the left, the place values represent greater amounts. As we move towards the right, the place values represent lesser amounts.
We label a number line with decimals that are equivalent to fractions. Decimal place values are based on the number 10, as tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. The place value of a decimal number tells us the denominator of its equivalent fraction. We write a mixed number as a decimal. We write the fraction or mixed number, and the decimal that is shown as a point on a number line. We solve two word problems that involve writing our answer as a fraction or mixed number and as a decimal.
