Conservatory Adaptation makes bold new insertions into a former conservatory that is believed to have been part of the extensive reworking of a significant heritage-listed Victorian estate c 1890. The project attempts to work deliberately within the heritage context making clear and decisive elaborations, and appendages to the old, while maintaining respectful distance. Central to the project, a 13-metre-long joinery unit houses kitchen, living and storage components. The unit transforms the space through its kinetic parts. Various small-scale interventions, some more subtle than others, punctuate the space to reveal the structure's original intent, and suggest a 'new'. Taking colour cues from the original Villeroy & Boch tiles with a theatrical blue 'art' door, or the exaggeration of the Victorian conservatory base to cleverly hide storage, or the addition of a tall vertical garden exterior backdrop - the project presents a joyous approach to heritage appreciation and contemporary living.
