It has a mix of city life and seaside beauty and is known for its sandy beaches, surfing spots, and inland rivers. About 743,000 people live in an area of about 5,000 square kilometres. Nerang was the first of a group of small villages to be formed in 1865. Starting in the 1920s, tourism brought many people to the area, leading to much growth.
