STORYLINE
Continuing to highlight the Obama administration's pursuit of closer ties with Asian countries, Singapore's prime minister on Tuesday became the third Asian leader to visit the White House this year.
During an Oval Office photo-opportunity, President Barack Obama told reporters he appreciated an outstanding partnership between the United States and Singapore on military, economic and other matters in Asia.
Obama took the opportunity to pay a tribute to the Singaporean leader.
"Personally I can tell you that there are very few world leaders who I am more appreciative of, in terms of their advice and counsel and thoughtful analysis than Prime Minister Lee, " Obama said.
Obama ignored questions from reporters about an alarming development in the Pacific region with North Korea announcing plans to restart its nuclear facilities.
Neither Obama nor Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned it in their brief remarks.
Instead, they focused on touting their bilateral cooperation.
Singapore, a close ally, is one of 11 countries taking part in the negotiations.
The US and Singapore also have strong defence ties.
