What does an eyelid specialist do? What kind of training do they have? Are they plastic surgeons or ophthalmologists?
The name of our specialty is oculoplastic surgery. As oculoplastic surgeons, our area of expertise is surgery of the eyelids, the orbit, and the tear duct. Additionally, we can divide oculoplastic surgery into two main categories: cosmetic surgery and functional or reconstructive operations.
The first category deals with cosmetic plastic surgery of the forehead, eyelids, and midface. This includes upper eyelid surgery, such as in eyelid lift surgery or blepharoplasty, as well as brow lift, which directly affects the appearance of the upper eyelids. We also help patients get rid of under eye bags and wrinkles with procedures such as lower eyelid blepharoplasty and to raise the midface with a cheek lift operation. Oculoplastic surgeons also apply botulinum toxin and dermal fillers and use chemical peels and other non-surgical alternatives to rejuvenate the eyes.
These are all cosmetic surgery procedures; however, eyelid surgeons also perform various kinds of reconstructive and functional operations. The diagnosis and treatment of eyelid skin cancer is one of those conditions, but also the treatment of droopy eyelids, known as ptosis, and eyelash malposition, to name a few.
