Song of Storms is a funny song. Before Link sets out on his quest, Sheik instructs him to first visit Kakariko Village, the old home of the Sheikah, as he must first obtain the hookshot located there in order to traverse the first dungeon. Once he receives the hookshot, Link finds himself in a windmill where he meets an angry little man with a music box. The man fumes that an ocarina boy came in seven years ago and played a song that messed up his windmill. In fact he’s so angry about it, that he has committed the song to memory and insists on teaching it to Link. This is the Song of Storms, which causes a massive thunderstorm when played, as the title implies. Upon learning the Song of Storms, Link immediately uses the Master Sword to return to his childhood seven years in the past and play the song for the unassuming windmill man, thus messing up the windmill, enraging the man, and fulfilling the cycle of the song.
Song of Storms is described as going around and around like a windmill. The carousel-like waltz, lively tempo, melodic span of an octave, and the basic idea-basic idea-continuation form of the melody all contribute to this effect. In my arrangement, I tried to combine the fury of a storm (and the windmill man) with the childish mischief of the song’s origin. It became somewhat of an angry-sounding waltz performed with a sense of mischief. What a paradox! (Just like the song’s origin!)
I also included a reprise of Song of Time (this time in triple meter) as a representation of the time traveling involved in the song’s quest. Many other musicians, including Taylor Davis, have created mashups of the two melodies as well.
