Victims of the biggest cholera epidemic in recent history, in the Caribbean nation of Haiti, are filing a multi-billion-dollar compensation claim against the United Nations in a New York court. The class-action claim is on behalf of more than eight-thousand dead and hundreds-of-thousands of people who became ill since the outbreak started in late 2010. Their lawyers say UN peacekeepers inadvertently introduced the diarrhoea-like disease. The UN says it has historic immunity from prosecution. (Investigations have pointed strongly to leaking sewage at a camp for UN soldiers from Nepal, where cholera is endemic, as the origin of the outbreak. One lawyer for the victims, Beatrice Lindstrom, says the UN knew -- or should have known -- that its sanitation practices in Haiti created a high risk of harm to the local population.
