In this episode of Flying Failures, we cast our eye over the experimental Witteman-Lewis XNBL-1 triplane heavy bomber, also known as the Barling Bomber. Despite being the largest airplane ever built to that point, such a distinction was eventually what grounded it, with performance that, even by 1924 standards, was incredibly poor. However, regardless of its flaws, the aircraft had a profound effect on the way future bombers would be built, and its legacy in the development of the USAF means it did find some success long after its demise.
