On this Episode of 14er Finisher, Laura and Steve tackle Elbert - The Highest Mountain in the State of Colorado and also the Highest Mountain in the entire Rocky Mountain Chain. As a 14er Finisher back in 2011 I would definitely NOT suggest this for your 1st 14er Peak. Bad idea. Don't do it. Chose a 14er with less than 3,500 feet of vertical gain - Elbert has 4,700 feet of gain. Instead, go for Sherman, Bierstadt, Grays and Torrey's, Bross, Lincoln, Democrat or Cameron. Your knee's will thank me later! Besides, lets all admit, the logic of doing the Highest Peak in Colorado 1st is not only backwards thinking it is completely illogical. If you do complete Elbert, or just get massacred trying the climb, afterwards go into nearby Leadville, Colorado after the climb and get a bite to eat at Casa Sanchez or Quincy's! I highly recommend both establishments.
