WHEN TO ROTATE YOUR CHILD'S TOYS / MONTESSORI SHELF + why you SHOULDN'T do scheduled toy rotations! | Montessori at Home
That's right, I said it - DON'T schedule your toy rotations. Don't aim to do weekly toy rotations. But DO incorporate toy rotations and shelf rotations into your child's playroom? Yes, Montessori shelf rotation (or simply toy rotations, if you're not using Montessori materials) is going to be extremely helpful for our kids. It keeps old toys feeling new and interesting, limits the child's choices, and increases independence. However, in the discussion of how to rotate toys or how to rotate a Montessori shelf, we often glaze over the discussion of schedules. Somehow, there is now an unspoken rule that this must happen on a weekly basis.
But have we stepped back to ask why? Why should toy rotations be on a weekly basis? Can't there be a different toy rotation schedule? Does there even need to be a Montessori toy rotation schedule?
My answer is...no. No, you do not need a schedule. That places the decision-making back on the adult.
We will discuss why that is problematic and what your toy rotation schedule should actually be based on.
