A Scale played on the cornet by an unknown performer, as recorded by Edouard Leon Scott de Martinville in December 1857. This recording was originally unintelligible due to being recorded before Scott had added a tuning fork timecode to calibrate his recordings, but thanks to researchers at First Sounds, the recording has been calibrated to itself, using the knowledge that a standard scale was the recording topic. The original recording lasts 8 seconds ; the second half of this upload has been edited by me to hear the scale played in descending order. This is the oldest sound recording of a recognizable subject in the world, and will probably remain so.
