After years of planning, design, and construction, Rio Tinto and Calibre achieved a successful commission of three overland slurry pipelines for the Robe Valley Sustaining (RVS) project in WA's Pilbara region in 2021.
In a groundbreaking move for Rio Tinto, the design incorporated 18m piping lengths instead of the standard 12m lengths. As a result, the 13km pipeline required 30% fewer pipe spools, leading to reduced installation costs and time.
We provided assistance to design engineer, Calibre, in selecting suitable slurry piping and hoses for the intended application. During the design phase of the project, they encountered four major engineering challenges:
