Before we start, let's have a trivia first about the safety pins.
Did you know that the Greeks and Romans used safety pins when wearing their garments. That is why we can see in the pictures that they are covered with a cloth!
A safety pin is a type of pin with a simple spring and handle or like a small simple lock that in English is called a clasp. The clasp has two uses; first, so that the sharp end of the pin is steady when the safety pin is attached; second, to protect the user from being pierced by the pointed edge.
Safety pins are commonly used to quickly attach pieces of fabric or clothing. There are other safety pins that were commonly used on baby diapers back then. The others use the safety pin for their loin garment like the Igorot in Benguet.
Sometimes the safety pin is also used as temporary solution for torn clothing. Safety pins are also used as accessories such as earrings, chains and wristbands.
In embroidery and quilting the safety pins are also used. Today there are other clothing designers who also use safety pins as decoration on their designs. Such as clothes designed by the famous clothing brand Versace.
The fibula, a type of ancient brooch -like pin is said to be the most ancestor of the safety pin. It was used by the Mycenaeans in the Greek Peloponnesus between the 14th and 13th Century BC. They use it in their garments.
Did you know that Walter Hunt, an American scholar was called the inventor of the safety pin that is similar to the safety pin we have today.
Hunt patented his invention on April 10, 1849. He later sold the patent to W.R. Grace and Company for just $400 only.
Some say that Hunt invented the safety pin to pay off his debt worth only $15 only which could be probably a huge amount before!
On October 12, 1849, an Englishman named Charles Rowley, of Birmingham, England; patented it too. He patented the safety pin in Britain just six months after Hunt patented it in America. Generally; we are more familiar with Hunt’s design and this is similar to what we usually use today!
