In this video we will review whether indoor cats can get Covid-19, and if they can pass it on to people or each other. We will also look at how to prevent your cat from getting coronavirus and the symptoms if your cat does get the virus.
I look at what the latest science is saying about cats catching Covid-19. Can they get it? Can they pass it on to each other? Can they pass it on to people? Are you at risk if your cat gets Covid-19?
Covid-19 is caused by a type of virus, and cats can catch viruses. But what are the odds that your indoor cat will get Covid-19? The short answer is very very small. And if they do get it, they almost certainly will get it from you. A study by veterinarian Sarah Hamer and Texas A&M University found that 80% of positive animals had sick owners.
So, your primary concern should not be can your cat give you Covid-19, it should be how to prevent Covid-19 from spreading to your cat. And the answer to that is the same as with any person in your household. Make sure that you don’t get it. Follow the proper routines about washing hands, wearing masks and social distancing.
These are the guidelines from the State of Pennsylvania regarding pets if you have Covid-19.
1. Avoid contact with pets, as you would other people.
2. Have another person at home take care of your pet while you are in isolation.
3. Avoid petting, holding, snuggling, facial contact, and sleeping in the same bed.
4. Wear a mask and wash your hands before feeding if you can’t find someone else to do it.
Here are the signs your cat might have caught Covid-19 from you or someone who came into your house.
1. fever
2. cough
3. diarrhea
4. respiratory distress
5. lethargy
Keep in mind that these could also be symptoms of other problems. And if you decide to take your cat to the vet, make sure to let them know that someone in you household had Covid-19. Fortunately, with most cats, if they get it the course of the disease is mild, and many won’t show any signs at all.
So, in summary. Your indoor cats can get Covid-19, but its very rare. If they do, it will almost certainly be from you. Take care that you don’t get it. If you do get it, isolate yourself from your cat. If you can’t isolate yourself from your cat, wash your hands and wear a mask before coming in contact with your cat.
