Samsung is releasing the Touch Wiz update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on August 5. We have our update and a hands on tour. This is the first custom overlay on an Android Honeycomb tablet and adds some cool features and needed uniqueness from other honeycomb tablets in the market.
On the home screen you still have the same 5 desktops but now you have the number indicator on the top to let you know which one you are on. They've made some changes to the navigation bar and notification area. The navigation bar adds a new screenshot icon to take a snapshot of anything that you have on-screen. There is also a new Mini Apps tray that include the new task manager, calendar, world clock, pen memo, calculator and music player. These apps will run on top of any of the applications you have open and move across the screen like a widget. So such as if you are doing some online banking and need a calculator it will show up on top and you can interact with both the browser and the calculator at the same time.
The notification center got a facelift and now includes the power center that you see in Galaxy S phones when you swipe down on the top of the phone. This will allow you to turn on and on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Notifications, Flight mode, Sound and Auto rotation.
Touch Wiz adds Live Panel widgets which give you quick access to information and updates Widgets for weather, e-mail, Social Hub, calendar and AP Mobile will automatically refresh themselves with the latest info and are easily re-sizable and work right along the standard android widgets.
Two of my favorite additions from the update is the task manager and new file manager. The task manager gives you more control over which apps are running and can close them out individually. You also can see how much memory you have available and clear it out.
The File manager is very useful in letting you manage your files right on the tablet. This is key for when you're not near a computer to plug it in. You can cut, copy, paste, delete and navigate through your content with ease This is the second time we've seen a manufacture include a file manager in the software with the other being on the Toshiba Thrive.
Swype is now available with this new update allow for easy text input. The keyboard works in both full widescreen and landscape orientation and has a mini mode which will resize the keyboard like a cell phone for a more familiar Swype experience.
They have included their music player as well which doesn't connect to Music By Google but is a pretty good player and works like you would expect a music player to work.
There is now an enhanced photo editor that lets you crop and enhance photos right on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. It's useful for those that are graphic designers and want some quick and easy to use while on the go. it's not going to replace a full editor but can get the job done.
Samsung has included their Music, Media and Social hubs. The Music Hub was in the original build but is updates and works much faster and smoother than before. It is a typical music store with top albums and songs sold and prices start at $0.99. The Media hub is like a DVR on the go. You can get movies and next day TV shows that you can buy and/or rent and with a Samsung account you can get access to content you have purchased on other devices like a Galaxy S phone or TV that is Media Hub enabled.
The social hub is a feed for your Facebook, Twitter and Linked In accounts. You can see the latest tweets and status updates. You can comment, tweet, retweet and update your own status right in the app. Links however will open up in the browser which takes you out of the experience.
The menus within the OS have a brighter look to them with white and sliver coloring. Samsung has added some business features like wireless printing, VPN support, Microsoft Exchange integration and on device encryption. If you lose your device there is Samsung Dive which when setup you can go to a browser and find your device via GPS. You can run on the ringer, lock and wipe the tablet all remotely.
Samsung did a great job with this update and their best iteration of Touch Wiz today. There is a bit of lag when going through the OS but its intermittent. This update firmly put the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ahead of other Android tablets as top tablet to get.
