Voltaire was a French Renaissance Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher. 💡 From 1694 to 1778, he was kicking ass and taking names. A huge advocate for freedom of speech, freedom of religion and separation of church and state, he often utilized satire to criticize social perceptions, as well as laws, that did not stand for the collective good of the community.
He felt that an analytical outlook was essential to rewriting history and he began upon many of his own 📜 historical pieces. Known for breaking away from the norm, he made note of things others before him didn't typically emphasize, such as accomplishments in the worlds of art and science, as well as social customs and history. His father had other dreams and hoped he would become a lawyer but Voltaire had chosen to defend people's rights in his own manner. Undoubtedly a rebel, he resisted the law with the intention to STIR MINDS and temporary exile and prison eventually ended up on his resume.
After being banned from Paris by Louis XV, he made way for Geneva. Initially, he was welcomed with open arms but social convention and politics ensured that would soon change. Having published a satirical poem ✒️ during his short stay, it caused such upset that it was outlawed, burned and banned for the duration of the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe. No stranger to controversy, he seemed to create as many enemies as friends.
Swiss land no longer being feasible, he instead chose to situate himself in a town called Ferney in the Jura Mountains ⛰️, on the French side of France-Swiss border. It was there that he founded a watchmaking enterprise eight years before his death. Unearthed from the grave and brought back from the dead, it's now known as Manufacture Royale.
At the age of 83, about a month prior to his death, Voltaire was initiated into Freemasonry. Some sources say that Benjamin Franklin had an influence on him.
Voltaire lived a life long but he lived a difficult one. Standing up for people's right to speak freely meant he had to be willing to do the same himself. Often this meant having to live with the consequences ⚡ of the things he chose to do, say and publish publicly. His actions and his writings created a lot of turbulence everywhere he went. Despite the fact that he at times jeopardized his own freedom and security, he somehow made a life learning to be comfortable in doing the things that many others feared to do.
"Use, do not abuse... neither abstinence nor excess ever renders man happy." —Voltaire
