Italian Cost Guard vessel Bruno Gregoretti arrived at the Maltese port of Valletta on Monday night, carrying 24 bodies and 27 people out of the 28 survivors of the accident off the Libyan cost.
Italian authorities have arrested the captain and a crew member as the vessel arrived at the port. The two men are believed to be traffickers on the migrant boat that capsized off Libya on Sunday, which caused over 800 deaths.
After the accident, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi compared the immigrant smuggling across the Mediterranean to the African slave trade centuries ago.
The Italian government and international organizations have appealed to other European countries not to leave Italy alone in addressing the illegal immigration crisis, prompting emergency talks on the matter.
“It is an issue that all of us need to face together. Europe should show its power as an union. As the regional conflicts intensified and more people fleeting runaway, all countries should work together to help the rescue in the Mediterranean,” said Carlotta Sami, spokeswoman for the UN High Commission for Refugees.
The EU commission also unveiled a 10-point action plan on Monday to stem the tide of immigration crossing the Mediterranean.
“The 10-point action plan set in the EU commission meeting is significant; it proves Europe’s attitude in fighting against human traffickers,” said Graziano Delrio, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy.
