STORYLINE:
Troops from Serbia's special police force were stationed at the border with Kosovo on Sunday as the breakaway province declared independence from Serbia.
Visiting the troops, Serbian Minister for Social Affairs and Head of the Serbian coordination body for the border area Rasim Ljajic said the area was unusually quiet on Sunday.
"We have guarantees from the local Albanian representatives that they will not be organising any rallies or celebrations in their villages," Ljajic said.
His comments came after Serbia's president rejected Kosovo's declaration of independence, calling the move unilateral and illegal and vowing to retake the territory Serbs consider their historic heartland.
President Boris Tadic was speaking in the Serbian capital Belgrade moments after Kosovo's parliament voted in Pristina to break away from Serbia.
Tadic said Serbia would not use force to reclaim the breakaway province, and urged Serbia's political parties and the 130,000 Serbs living in Kosovo to remain calm.
