At 8.15pm on Friday, September 5 1997, the body of Princess Diana was taken from St. James's Palace to Kensington Palace the evening before her funeral. The Prince of Wales and Prince William and Harry followed the hearse. Tens of thousands stood along the route in near silence as rain fell with the darkness illuminated by thousands of flash bulbs.
