Italy and its 60.4 million inhabitants are in near-total lockdown because of the coronavirus outbreak. But what does that actually mean?
As news of the government’s decision to expand strict containment rules to the entire country spread on Monday evening, Italians began wondering how their lives would change. Is it okay to go to work ? What about visiting elderly relatives and walking the dog?
People took to social media to share their interpretations, ask questions or just vent about an escalation of restrictions that has no recent precedent in the Western world. To answer the most frequent queries, the government published a handy guide.
Dos:
- Go to work (but working remotely is preferred whenever possible)
- Jog (outdoor sports are OK as long as you do them alone)
- Visit elderly relatives
- Deliver goods or food for work
- Take a bus, train or taxi (as long as it's for work)
- Go to the post office or other public offices
- Go to the pub (but just eat and drink, and only before 6 p.m.)
- Work on your farm
Don'ts:
- Go shopping (unless for food, medicine or household staples)
- Go to the gym (they're closed anyway)
- Go to school or university (they're closed, too)
- Go to the theater, cinema, museum or other public venues (they're all closed as well)
- Leave the house with a temperature (even if the fever is due to seasonal flu)
- Dine out (cafes and restaurants are only open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
- Get married (masses, weddings and funerals are suspended)
- Go on holiday
