Please join the National Parole Transformation Project (NPTP) for Part 2 of our virtual teach-in, Texas: Fighting for Parole Reform and Transformative Advocacy, focusing on key issues and challenges within the Texas parole system and critical lessons to draw for advocates working to advance reforms in the State. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles claims that it seeks to maximize “the restoration of human potential while restraining the growth of prison and jail populations.” How does this claim square with the reality of conditions faced by communities throughout Texas? What are the challenges with this system and how can they be transformed?
Panelists include Savannah Eldrige, Co-Founder of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery-Texas and Board Chair of the Texas Incarcerated Families Association; Robert Lilly, Participatory Defense Organizer at Grassroots Leadership; Justin Martinez, Policy Analyst and Bexar County Project Director at the Texas Center for Justice and Equity (TCJE); Jorge Antonio Renaud, National Criminal Justice Director & Director of the Southwest Region at Latino Justice (LJ); Marci Marie Simmons, Community Outreach Coordinator at Lioness Justice Impacted Women's Alliance; and Amanda Rodriguez, Legislative Director for Texas House Representative Jarvis Johnson.
Co-moderated by Helen Gaebler, Senior Research Attorney & Lecturer at the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law at The University of Texas School of Law, and Timmy Chau, Community Outreach Lead of the National Parole Transformation Project.
