XXL Has been a power player for the longest time in Hip Hop culture. Today I am going to show you how rappers get on the XXL freshman list and how it is all about business. This stuff especially goes for the xxl freshman list 2018
Unfortunately with the rise of the internet and all of the opinions and websites that exist, everything has branched out and people get their main sources of hip hop news and information from a lot of difference places.
For that reason one of the main things that keeps XXLs name so incredibly relevant is the XXL Freshman list. Which means every year in order to keep eyeballs on them they need to have the biggest and most buzzing artists on that list in order to push their fan bases to the rest of the list.
Here is how to get on the list
1) You have to be someone who is buzzing so much that they think if they put you on that cover it is going to make them money
2) They have to believe that you are affecting the culture in some way. By putting culturally significant people on the cover and those artists pushing their fans to XXL, XXL will stay culturally significant by association. So of course they want those rappers on their.
3) If you don't have their attention organically... it is not feasible that you will get a slot on this list. You really have to be someone doing SOMETHING in Hip Hop.
I mean look at all of the covers over the last few years. Usually at least 1 of those artists becomes a superstar and 3 of them stay really relevant. The rest kind of fall off
4) If there aren't enough rappers really making that kind of noise, this is where industry connections come in. If people at XXL REALLY like you and they want to fill these slots, well if you have a connect, you might just get that placement.
5) I have heard rumors that you can purchase your way onto the cover. I don't really know if I believe this 100%. But if we are thinking about XXL as a business... don't you think they would be likely to let a rapper who IS buzzing somewhat onto the cover for $30-$50,000? Especially if they feel like other choices wouldn't bring in that much money in eyeballs and clicks.
This makes sense to me if I am the person running a magazine that needs to make enough money to be able to pay staff and have money to promote the site in order to compete with other massive hip hop brands like Genius and Complex.
Now all of these politics and the using of rappers brand names in order to boost themselves...
This is the reason that BIG NAME rappers who are super big just turn down the freshman list.
Like DRAKE, ASAP ROCKY and more.
They know the freshman list is just using their name and buzz to boost their site clicks and buzz to make THEM money.
This is how most entertainment businesses work anyways.
Now like I said in the list of benefits it is definitely beneficial, don't get me wrong, I would definitely take a slot of the freshman list just so have that bragging right and cultural influence.
I've always wanted to get myself a slot on the XXL cover. I even mentioned it in a song on my first mixtape in 2010.
