The HK417 is basically a HK416 chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO round. The HK416 itself is an upgraded version of the M4, using the same short-stroke piston design used in the G36 serie. It's a "battle rifle", made to engage targets at longer distance compared to assault rifles.
