A friend of mine wanted a new coffee table with a hidden compartment. So, Bob Barker and I decided to tackle the project. Our goal was to make it so the hidden compartment wasn't obvious like many others are. That is the main reason we did not use drawer slides for the top - because then you need to cut some obvious notches in the aprons for them to function. That feels like it defeats the whole purpose of a concealed compartment to me. We also wanted to go with a design that looks good, but is attainable for a wide range of skill levels.
