I bought some mealworms to see if they'd help my partially sighted gecko put some weight on, or atleast get some food down her that doesnt move to quickly.
Anyway, I was very interested to see what came out when they hatched from a pupa. I decided not to google it and just see for myself.
Once they were hatched I looked it up, and turns out they are called Darkling Beetles.
So I observed the transitions between their life stages, larva, pupa, adult.
Whilst hatching I realised a few things; their legs, antennae and back of their head changes colour, and becomes a dark orange. These areas become more mobile when the pupa wriggles, attempting to hatch. A very thin piece of skin/exoskeleton eventually comes off when they continue to wriggle. Its sock-like a keeps the arms and wings in. Once it comes off the legs are free and the wings go around to the back of the beetle. The beetle gets darker as the days go on. The last picture in the video is off of google. Unfortunately throughout filming one camera stopped working, and other's battery died, and I cant find the charger, so i was unable to get a decent last image.
All beetles are released once they have hatched. The two that I filmed will now be released.
I hope you enjoyed the video, and possibly learnt something - like I did when observing these creatures.
