Childhood trauma causes long-lasting effects. Alison suffered from sexual abuse by her narcissistic father and was then blamed for the abuse by her narcissistic mother. Childhood trauma takes many forms. When children are blamed for the abuse they experience, this makes it impossible for the child to develop a healthy sense of self.

Alison is an incest survivor trying to make sense out of her childhood trauma and the consequences of growing up in a toxic home.

Childhood trauma can be related to childhood emotional neglect, physical, emotional, sexual, and or psychological abuse. In Alison's case, the childhood abuse she experienced was denied and worse, she was blamed for the abuse. This created tremendous guilt and shame for Alison which was NOT her fault.

Throughout Alison's childhood, she was forced to depend on the very people who were abusing her. Today, the childhood programming she experienced that caused her to feel responsible for all the abuse she experienced is still playing out in her adult life.

Children of narcissistic parents, who are now suffering from codependency symptoms, may be struggling to learn how to love themselves after narcissistic abuse. Narcissists tend to attract people pleasers, or codependent personalities. Because codependents are eager to please, because they seek outside validation, they are easy targets for narcissistic lovers, and friends.

It is not easy to learn how to love yourself after narcissistic abuse, but with the right codependency recovery tools, it is possible. It is even possible to find love after codependency.
