Only one survived the Tamil Nadu chopper crash which killed CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others. The Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed that Group Captain Varun Singh is the lone survivor of the Mi-17V5 chopper crash. Singh is currently undergoing treatment at the Military Hospital in Tamil Nadu's Wellington. Singh was honoured with the Shaurya Chakra on this year’s Independence Day for saving his LCA Tejas fighter aircraft during an emergency in October 2020. He is the directing staff of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington. Around noon today, IAF confirmed a Mi-17 V5 chopper carrying the CDS crashed near Coonoor.
