The Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia commemorates one of the most recognized images of World War II, the raising of the flag on the Island of Iwo Jima. When they battle ended seven thousand Marines had been killed in action and another nineteen thousand wounded. A news photographer captured the moment and it became the inspiration for the memorial. It exemplifies the Marine Corps motto of Semper Fidellis "Always Faithful."
