A year after his near-miss at Skokie Country Club, Bob Jones, 21, broke through at Inwood Country Club on Long Island for his first of four U.S. Open titles. Not that it was simple; Jones made double bogey on the 72nd hole and Bobby Cruickshank birdied the home hole to force a playoff. The two were tied on 18 when Jones hit a 2-iron from the rough 8 feet from the hole, setting up two putts for victory.
