ROMA Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano.
ROMA Basilica di San Pietro in Vatican. St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is considered the most important property of the Christian world. On the creation of the Cathedral worked the best Italian masters of the Renaissance.
We were lucky: 2016. it was an anniversary, and we entered the Cathedral through the Holy gates, which open every 25 years, and the rest of the time immured.
The facade of the building, designed by the architect Maderna, reaches 45 meters in height and 115 meters in width. The decorative wall above the cornice is crowned with huge sculptures of John the Baptist, Christ and the eleven apostles. The dome of the Cathedral rises to a height of 136.57 meters from the floor of the Basilica to the top of the crowning cross. It is the tallest dome in the world.
Inside the Cathedral is magnificent, striking harmony of proportions, huge size and richness of design — there are lots of statues, altars, tombstones, many wonderful works of art.
The altar of St. Peter's is facing West, not East, as in most Christian churches. Under the altar - the tomb of St. Peter.
