April 23rd is World Book Day! It is a day to encourage reading of all ages. In honor of today, Howard letterpress printed a large halftone from the California State Printing Office’s Book Binding Department in 1914.

Halftones were used to introduce photography in newspapers and books starting in the late 1880s. The pictures in halftones are broken into a series of equally spaced dots of varying size.
