Singer/songwriter/guitarist/bass guitarist Steve Diggle is the only current member of the original lineup of Manchester punk/post punk band Buzzcocks. The band formed in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, based on the duo’s shared affinity for the Velvet Underground, in particular the song “Sister Ray”. Steve joined not long after along with drummer John Mayer, cementing the classic original unit. Devoto left the band in 1977 and formed Magazine, one of the first so-called “post punk” bands. Mr. Diggle has written several songs for the band including one of my favorites, “Airwaves Dream”. Buzzcocks disbanded in 1981, but not before released a trio of highly regarded albums and singles. Steve was briefly a solo artist, then in 1982 formed a new band, Flag of Convenience. F.O.C. issued several singles and three studio albums. Come 1989 and Buzzcocks had reformed. Since that time, there have been 6 more albums. Sadly, Pete Shelley passed away in 2018. Steve has grabbed the reigns and is now front man with a new lineup. And since 2000 he has recorded and released 4 solo albums to date.
