A concert performance of the great Marcelle Meyer playing Manuel de Falla's 'Nights In The Gardens Of Spain' at a Rome concert on May 12, 1958, with the Orchestra di Roma della RAI conducted by Mario Rossi. Meyer studied with Ricardo Viñes, to whom this work was dedicated - in fact he had suggested that Falla orchestrate it rather than it being a set of nocturnes for solo piano, as was the original idea. She creates a sultry, evocative mood and plays with a remarkable sense of rhythm, a rich tonal palette, and a perfect balance of sensitivity and virtuosity.
This performance took place a mere 6 months before her untimely death and captures her playing at its peak. How regrettable that a performance of the Strauss Burleske from the same concert apparently suffers from such poor sound that it could not be released.
