Eco Tourism is one of the most sustainable ways to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Not only do visitors learn valuable insights into the state of the Great Barrier Reef and it's vulnerabilities, but they are able to positively impact the reef and assist researchers while they explore it.
These actions no matter how small have a huge impact when we think about awareness, which is arguably our largest environmental tool to save and restore The Great Barrier Reef.
This film was produced by our team Descent Productions while on project with Tourism and Events Queensland. The operator featured in this video is Passions of Paradise out at Milln Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is struggling due to a number of factors, most notably climate change and warming sea temperatures. Oversimplified, the warmer sea's are causing the corals to stress, and resulting in coral bleaching, and coral bleaching events. Which in it of itself is a natural reaction, and is an ordinary part of the coral life cycle, where after a bleaching event the corals will take a number of years to recuperate and recover until the next event. However climate change is causing these coral bleaching events to occur at much faster intervals, where now the coral has far less time to recover in between these bleaching events, and thus resulting in mass coral destruction.
Researchers are doing everything in their power to protect the coral reef, and aid in coral recovery, but our largest weapon is awareness and change. Thus the importance of these eco tourism programs, that not only do they positively contribute to researchers, they are educational.
