USW's Sustainable Environment Research Centre (SERC) has developed innovative biotechnology which utilises industrial waste carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce products including ‘green’ methane gas.
This technology could be integrated into the gas and electricity grids for energy storage to enable more deployment of renewable energy.
Greener energy solutions like this can also help industry to reduce their energy use, making them more sustainable economically and environmentally.
If we captured and utilised just 10% of the CO2 produced by the power and industrial sectors in the UK alone that would produce methane gas with a value of over £1BN per year.
