Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson died aboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar, on 21st October 1805, living long enough to hear that they had won! His body was brought back to England. He laid in state in the Painted Hall at Greenwich from 5th to the 8th January whe he was brought to Admiralty House on Whitehall, via river procession, for one final night.
.
The following day, 9th January, the funeral procession wound the 1.5 miles from Admiralty House to St Paul's Cathedral, itself longer than the distance it had to cover. Nelson's coffin was transported on a funeral car modelled on HMS Victory.
.
After a solemn ceremony, at which the royal princes attended as private citizens becasue protocol dictated that Royalty did not attend funerals other than those of their own family, Nelson was
laid to rest.
.
Nelson's final resting place is in the crypt of St Paul's, directly beneath the dome, in the black marble sarcophagus that Henry VIII had once earmarked for himself after confiscating it from Thomas Wolsey!
