Kenya: Activists behind anti-government protests are being forced to rethink their approach after this week's demonstrations were marred by widespread violence and looting, according to analysts.
Sudan: More than 55,000 people have fled Sinja, the capital of Sennar state in the southeast, as fighting rages between paramilitary forces and the army, the U.N. humanitarian office, OCHA, said. Sennar is home to more than one million displaced Sudanese.
DR Congo: A Reuters report said Thursday that disarray in the country’s armed forces has been a major factor in the success of the M23 rebel group’s advance in the east, with military officers citing mismanagement in leadership and a lack of experience among troops as issues.
China: The foreign ministry confirmed Thursday that an armed attack on a mining site in gold-rich Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo killed “several Chinese nationals” who worked for a private company. Local sources told news agency Agence France-Presse that at least four people were killed.
South Africa: The country’s new, multi-party unity government under President Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in Wednesday at a ceremony in Cape Town. The unity government is the first of its kind in the country after 30 years of rule by the ANC.
