The turned edge was the height of luxury leather goods for the most part of the 19th and 20th century. A marker of skill and craftsmanship that could not be replicated through mechanical means alone.

Turned edge work even had it's own name in the industry - 'fancy leather goods', which was distinguished from the cheaper and quicker to produce 'cut edge work'. Therefore, fancy leather goods demanded a higher price and was reserved for luxury producers who possessed craftsmen skilled enough to perform this sought after technique.
