I am in Italy this week! I've been backpacking Europe for a few weeks now while on my sabbatical, starting in Cinque Terre, then to Switzerland, and now I'm spending 1 week in Venice and Rome!
Venice was so beautiful. It was fun wandering the streets and canals, people watching people on the gondolas, and stopping (frequently) for pasta, cicchetti, and Aperol spritz. We explored the neighborhoods of Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo, and Cannaregio and also went up to the view point at Fondaco dei Tedeschi. The food in Venice was cheap and delicious, especially the duck pasta and the grilled fish platters.
We checked out Rome for a couple of days after but to be honest, it was too hot and we weren't feeling great. We spent the first few days exploring the Colosseum, the ancient ruins, the Spanish steps, and the Trastevere neighborhood. It was impressive to hear about how the Colosseum was built, what life was like in ancient Rome, and how gladiators fought in the Colosseum!
Onwards to the next country!
