Circuses have always been controversial for their treatment of animals. Training wild animals always requires some degree of physical abuse from their trainers. The more strong-willed the animals, the more physical abuse they are subjected to. This is the story of Tyke, a strong-willed female elephant who had just had enough of the torture and one day, she snapped.

Tyke was a 21-year-old African bush elephant born in Mozambique who performed with Circus International of Hawaii.

Tyke had tolerated abuse for years from her trainers and was at her breaking point. There were several complaints of animal abuse filed against her trainer over the years. Moreover in 1988 several people witnessed Tyke's old handler beating her to the point where she was screaming and bending down on three legs to avoid being hit.

On August 20, 1994, Tyke was supposed to perform in a scheduled show.  During the performance, Tyke went berserk and she trampled and critically injured her groomer Dallas Beckwith. Her trainer Allan Campbell tried to rescue Beckwith from being trampled to death but Tyke knocked him to the ground and crushed him with her trunk, killing him in the process. The audience members started panicking and rushing towards the exits. She then charged outside of the arena. The circus promoter Steve Hirano tried to fence her in but she trampled him and would have killed him too if not for the police who started shooting at her.

For nearly 30 minutes, Tyke ran through the streets, looking for freedom but the Honolulu police kept shooting at her and eventually after being shot 86 times, she succumbed to nerve damage and brain haemorrhage. The people who witnessed the shooting were aghast and heartbroken.

Alan's autopsy revealed that he died from severe internal injuries, including major skull and chest fractures. The reports also revealed that he had cocaine in his system and was under the influence of alcohol on that particular day.

The Tyke incident became international and affected circuses worldwide. Tyke became a symbol for animal rights groups calling to stop wild animals from being used for entertainment. The only positive result of this story is that a lot of countries have since banned animals in circuses, improving the lives of countless animals that would otherwise be subjected to physical abuse.

This is just one of the examples of torture that animals have undergone for the sake of human entertainment. The story of Tyke is not an isolated one. In 1903, a circus elephant named Topsy was electrocuted in New York after she trampled her handlers.
In 1916, another circus elephant named Mary was hanged to death for killing her handler in the town of Erwin, Tennessee. And there are countless more stories of such heartbreaking cases of animal abuse where the animals snapped and had to pay with their own lives
