Every year, Transparency International publishes the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). The 2023 CPI reveals that most countries have made little to no progress in tackling public sector corruption in more than a decade.

Governments are largely failing to stop corruption. Over 80% of the world’s population lives in countries with CPI scores below the global average of 43, which strongly indicates serious corruption problems.

The global trend of weakening justice systems is reducing accountability for public officials, which allows corruption to thrive.

Since its inception in 1995, the CPI has become the leading global indicator of public sector corruption. The Index scores 180 countries and territories around the world based on perceptions of public sector corruption.
