Strafe by Pixel Titans is an interesting mix of old and new; a nostalgic shooter with a 16 bit look and fast-paced movement that emphasizes action over exploration or contemplation, but that also (in its current, broken, pre-release "Time Attack" build) forces you to choose only one from among three weapons (but gives you unlimited ammo for that weapon).
It's also fully 3D, more like Quake than Doom, but the art style and gameplay seem more like Doom to me.
In the "speed zone" time attack build you have to kill 90% of the enemies in the level before the exit door starts to open; leaderboards are based on completion time only, and are grouped by weapon type.
The game recently was funded on Kickstarter-- the time attack build was released last week in the final hours of that campaign, and after it succeeded, the team is adding cooperative play as a stretch goal, with funding for that and other goals to remain open for another couple of months.
