Dead heading your canna will keep the blooms returning all summer. Cut off the seed pods to encourage you Canna to put out flowers instead of focusing on seeds. If you are into seeds, then let it go and look forward to a fun and bountiful seed harvest.
To collect Canna seeds, wait until the pods are dried out and the simply pop the seeds out of their dried pods. Start your seeds inside 8 weeks before the last frost. Canna seeds come with a hard outer shell that will need to be scared. You can scare a seed by gently cutting the outer shell or rubbing it away with sand paper. Make sure you don't go to deep or you will damage the seed.
Soak the seed to 24 hours before you place in your soil. Place in warm sunny place and wait for germination. Transfer when you have leaves.
Propagating Canna from seed is hard, but worth the challenge! If you are into collecting seeds and want a fun and cute way to store and label your seeds, check out my downloadable seed packet templates:
