I took 2 cubicle shelves from Walmart and turned them into a pet rat and mouse cage. Working on litter training them and its mostly working though I need to tie down their boxes since that seems to be our biggest problem in keeping it in the boxes. We are trying the pee rock method as well. Perhaps if I can find heavier smooth rocks it will solve my issue of them kicking the boxes around lol. I got some previously painted wood 1x3" to make a lip to the flat shelves to be a buffer to them just tossing out whatever they please. I used 1x2" previously painted wood for the door staples on both sides and it holds the doors together perfectly the hardware cloth. We added a back from a 4x8' sheet of wood I cut to fit. The mice (Amelia and Minerva) have that first level (lacking the cubicle seperator) and one half of the second layer (the only level with a separator). My girl rats (Nyx, Astraea, Pickle, Maka, Cinnamon, and Oreo) get that half of the second layer and 4 levels under that. So far so good and yes it is wood and rodents can easily chew wood but our mice are quite happy with their setup. Our rats are enjoying theirs but they need more to chew on so I thew in some natural rawhide. It stopped what chewing on the wood there was.
I got this idea from Erins Animals. she used Ikea wood and I figured its essentially the same things the bookshelves and cubicle shelves are made of. I plan on taking my old book shelf which is bigger and doing the same thing for my boys they are bigger and there is 7 of them. They will have the entirety of the book shelf since our mice werent expected we only have the pair. We took them in from a friend who needed to rehome them, much some of our boys, and 2 of our girls. Its not a perfect set up but we are loving it so far and will adapt along the way.
