When people think of performing, images of public speaking or being on some sort of stage often comes to mind. But really, performing is "doing" anything you’ve prepared for with a lot of time and effort. And anxiety can really put a halt on your mindset and, ultimately, how well you perform. Below are some reasons we get anxious when performing:
1. We care so much about whatever it is we’re doing
2. We want others' validation and we want them to enjoy it
3. We want to feel confident to easily perform, but our nerves are making that impossible which adds to the vicious cycle
So how can you create an affirmative mind and easily move from fear to confidence? One way is to observe these fears and be sure not to lock into them with your thoughts. Present what you want in your thinking process and speak it! Make these statements out loud:
1. I’m grateful for how well my performance goes
2. I’m grateful others enjoy and compliment me for how well I did
3. I’m grateful for how confident I feel and how easy it is to perform my best
Focus on what you want to create, rather than having to fear the issues you don’t want to create. Remember: creation-thinking rather than prevention-thinking.
