This week, the New York Times ran a front page photo taken by Linsey Adario of a family killed by a Russian rocket in plain view of journalists outside Kyiv. With Russia shelling the evacuation routes other than those that lead to Russia or Belarus, the untimely death of ordinary people is climbing rapidly. So far, 1.7 million people have fled, yet there are still millions in the country and hundreds of thousands trapped in the cities of strategic importance for Russia’s advance. From Kharkiv and Kyiv in the north to Mariupol in the south, cities and towns are being heavily shelled and in some cases as in Mariupol, the city is besieged.
Russia has issued a statement, the most explicit so far, of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its "special military operation". Meetings between US and Europe/UK leaders are taking place daily as frantic diplomatic efforts continue. EU leaders are scheduled to discuss Ukraine’s bid to join the EU.
There are further sanctions being recommended by the West but there is caution against banning Russian oil and gas. The situation is fast moving on the ground and we will aim to bring the latest and provide global context and analysis.
