This video shows how we use a simple dolly and slapper to remove dents in a Series 2 Bonnet center panel. We then go over the area with a shrinking disc to REALLY smooth things out, so that NO FILLER is needed - other than a few coats of a high-build primer, block sanded down...
This method can be used on any panel, or areas where you have past repairs that are still too bumpy - as was the case here. This process is relatively gentle, and does a good job of smoothing things out, so you can give it a try at home, but here are a couple pointers:
1) Your dolly should have a COMPOUND curve to it - many dollies that look like this actually don't have that, so make sure you use SOME type of dolly with a compound curve to it (see video for explanation...)
2) You don't put much stretch into the panel with this method, but you WILL put in a little. What is a bigger isue is that your old bumpy repair from the last guy probably DID put in more stretch, but all of those up and down bumps are currently absorbing it. Once you make the metal all flat with this method, you may find that stretch is alot more of an issue now. Then you WILL need to use the shrinking disc for sure, and that's another discussion...
3) Sometimes, it's best to leave well enough alone - think long and hard before you do this if it is a big wide area as shown here. But for smaller areas - especially if the area is curved - go ahead and give this a shot. On a really flat area - think again - just the tiniest amount of stretch is a BIG problem in a flat area...
Hope this helps! - Chuck :-)
